Coaching For Parents With An Autistic Child

The range of emotions you go through with an autistic child cannot be fully understood by parents who haven’t gone through it. The stress, chaos, grief, and hope are beyond what most people can relate to. It can leave you feeling completely isolated and even turn married couples against each other.

It doesn’t have to be that way. There is hope.

My name is Thomas West and my son was diagnosed with low functioning autism at age three. I was devastated, but with seven other children, I didn’t have time to feel sad. I had to find solutions.

My son is a grown man now. He’s doing really well and is a productive, employed young man. It’s been an incredible journey that has motivated me to write a book and begin coaching other parents who are going through exactly what I went through.

The path is not easy, but you won’t walk it alone.

The Story Of The Autistic Boy (And His Dad)

“Alone in Autism: Hope at the End of the Rope”

When Dante was diagnosed with severe autism at age three, the experts told me to curb my expectations. They said my son would never learn to speak or read, that I should put him in a special school and brace for a lifetime of support.

As a single father, I refused to accept this fate for his beloved son. Through tireless research and refusing to settle, I discovered a better way forward tailored to Dante’s unique needs. I took my son into the mainstream school system and doubled down helping him exceed expectations.

Against all odds, the boy who was told he’d never talk is now conversing at age-appropriate levels. The child who would supposedly never read is devouring books. Dante engages in sports and music just like his peers, overcoming challenge after challenge.

In my book, I share the emotional story of Dante’s diagnosis, the valleys and peaks on the road to progress, and the therapies and techniques used to help my son thrive beyond all expectations. I shed light on navigating the school system, fostering meaningful social connections, and why I never threw in the towel despite pressure from experts.

My goal for this book is to help parents of autistic children help their kids live fulfilled, integrated lives filled with joy and purpose. Our story proves that so-called “low-functioning” children are capable of incredible growth when given the support and belief they deserve.

We Know You Have Questions

K

Are you certified?

I am not a “certified” coach. I approach coaching from a much different perspective than most traditional coaches — from that of a parent who lives a similar parenting journey. A parent who had to struggle and scrape and learn how to successfully parent a child with autism through trial and error. I’ve been where you are. I figured most of it out. I want to help you get to the other side faster.

What results can you promise?

Every family is different, so I don't make promises. My goal is to give you ideas for things to try and support you in your efforts to find what works best for you, your child, and your family.

How long are your sessions?

This is up for discussion, but my thinking is that if we do group sessions, we'll go for an hour and a half at the most.
